Prof. Jishan He
Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering
Jishan He, born in September 1934 in Liuyang, Hunan Province, is an ethnic Han Chinese and member of the Communist Party of China. As a distinguished geophysicist and engineering management scientist, he currently serves as the Founding Dean of the Institute of Urban Underground Space and Energy at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and holds the prestigious title of Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
With over six decades of dedication to higher education and scientific research, AcademicianJishan He stands as a pioneering figure in China's electromagnetic exploration field. His groundbreaking work has propelled international advancements in geophysics by establishing a world-leading comprehensive system encompassing theories, methodologies, technologies, equipment, and applications in electromagnetic exploration. This achievement has enabled China's electromagnetic detection capabilities to evolve from technology importation and catch-up learning to global leadership, establishing an exemplary "Chinese paradigm" in geophysical exploration.
His seminal innovations, particularly the Wide-Field Electromagnetic Method, have been extensively implemented across critical domains including petroleum, natural gas, geothermal energy, coal, and metallic mineral exploration, as well as engineering geological assessments and hazard detection. These contributions have played a pivotal role in safeguarding China's energy security, resource sustainability, and public safety.
Prof. Tianshou Zhao
Academician of China Academy of Sciences
Tianshou Zhao is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and an expert in energy science and engineering thermophysics. He graduated from the Department of Thermal Physics Engineering at Tianjin University in 1983, obtained his master's degree from the same university in 1986, and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Hawaii, USA, in 1995. He currently serves as a Chair Professor at the Southern University of Science and Technology, a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). He has been awarded the Croucher Senior Research Achievement Award, the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress, the Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Engineering Research Achievement Award. He has been listed as a Highly Cited Researcher and among the Most Influential Scientific Minds by Clarivate/Thomson Reuters. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer and a member of the Advisory Board for Energy & Environmental Science.
Professor Zhao has long been dedicated to research on heat and mass transfer theory and battery energy storage technologies. Addressing the significant national demand for renewable energy utilization, he has focused on key scientific issues of energy transfer and conversion in energy storage devices such as fuel cells, flow batteries, and metal-air batteries. He has established a coupling theory of heat and mass transfer with electrochemical energy conversion in battery energy storage systems, proposed methods for the synergistic transport of heat, mass, electrons, and ions, and made breakthroughs in the key technologies for high-power flow battery design. He has introduced a novel method for storing electricity using rechargeable liquid energy carriers and invented a new energy storage system with independent charging and discharging devices, achieving simultaneous leaps in system efficiency and output power. These advancements will play a crucial role in addressing challenges such as the integration of wind and solar power into the grid, enabling the large-scale utilization of renewable energy, and tackling air pollution and climate change issues.
