Prof.Tongyi Zhang

Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences
Biography:

Prof. Tongyi Zhang is an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a Professor at Shanghai University, a Chair Professor at The Hong Kong University of Science andTechnology (Guangzhou), and the Dean of the Materials Genome Institute of Shanghai University, with expertise in materials science, engineering science, and solid mechanics. In December 2011, he was elected as an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Prof. Zhang serves as Vice President of the Far East and Oceanic Fracture Society and as a member of the Executive Committee of the International Conference on Fracture. His honors and awards include the State Natural Science Award (Second Class, twice), the Croucher Senior Research Fellowship, the ASM International Fellow Award, the Young Science and Technology Award from the China Association for Science and Technology, and the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress.

Prof. Marc A. Rosen

Biography:
Marc A. Rosen, Ph.D., is a Professor at University of Ontario Institute of Technology in Oshawa, Canada, where he served as founding Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. Dr. Rosen has served as President of the Engineering Institute of Canada and of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering. He has acted in many professional capacities, including Editor-in-Chief of various journals and a Director of Oshawa Power and Utilities Corporation. With over 70 research grants and contracts and 900 technical publications, Dr. Rosen is an active teacher and researcher in sustainable energy, sustainability, and environmental impact. Much of his research has been carried out for industry. Dr. Rosen has worked for such organizations as Imatra Power Company in Finland, Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago, the Institute for Hydrogen Systems near Toronto, and Ryerson University in Toronto, where he served as Chair of the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Industrial Engineering. Dr. Rosen has received numerous awards and honours, and is a Fellow of numerous societies .

Prof. AGUSTIN VALERA-MEDINA

Cardiff University, UK

Professor at Cardiff School of Engineering. He has participated as PI/Co-I on 43 industrial projects with multi-nationals including PEMEX, Rolls-Royce, Siemens, Ricardo, WWU and FloGas (>£41M). He has published +270 papers (h-index 53), most concerning ammonia power. Prof. Valera-Medina led Cardiff’s contribution to the Innovate-UK ‘Decoupled Green Energy’ Project (2015-2018) led by Siemens and in partnership with STFC and the University of Oxford, which aims to demonstrate the use of green ammonia produced from wind energy. He is currently PI of various projects (incl. SAFE-AGT, FLEXnCONFU, OceanREFuel, CAIPIRINH3A, etc.) to demonstrate ammonia power in turbine engines, Internal Combustion Engines, boilers and furnaces. He has been part of various scientific boards, chairing sessions in international conferences and moderating large industrial panels on the topic of “Ammonia for Direct Use”. He has supported two Royal Society Policy Briefings related to the use of ammonia as an energy vector, and he is a principal author of two books concerning ammonia combustion. He chairs the topic of “Ammonia Firing” for the British Standards Institute, and he is Co-Director of the Institute of Net Zero Innovation, Director of the Centre of Excellence on Ammonia Technologies (CEAT), Cardiff University. He is a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales and the Mexican Academy of Engineering.

Prof.Christos Markides

Imperial College London, UK

Christos Markides was born in Athens (Greece) in 1978, and grew up first in Johannesburg (South Africa) until the age of 7 and then in Limassol (Cyprus). After finishing school in 1995 and attending compulsory military service from 1995 to 1997, he left Cyprus to undertake a 4-year MEng degree in Engineering at the University of Cambridge. Following this first degree, he did a PhD in Energy Technologies, also at the Department of Engineering of the University of Cambridge under the supervision of Professor Epaminondas (Nondas) Mastorakos, which he completed in 2005.

After completing his education, he worked for a short time as a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) at Cambridge University Engineering Department (CUED) while also being a Fellow and Engineering Director of Studies at Robinson College. In 2006 he co-founded a spin-out company, which was embedded in CUED, to develop a thermally powered fluid pumping technology based on a two-phase thermofluidic oscillator concept. He acted as the company's Technical Director until 2008, when he was awarded a 5-year co-current Fellowship by Research Councils UK (RCUK) and (then) Foster Wheeler Energy Ltd (FWEL); later acquired by John Wood Group. He was appointed to the post of Lecturer in Clean Energy Processes at the Department of Chemical Engineering of Imperial College in late 2008. He became Senior Lecturer in 2014, Reader in 2016 and Professor in 2018.

He now leads the Clean Energy Processes (CEP) Laboratory, coordinates the Experimental Multiphase Flow (EMF) Laboratory, which is the largest such experimental space at Imperial College London, and is a Co-Founder and Director of recent spin-out company Solar Flow.

Assoc. Prof. Yunlong Zi

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), China

Prof. Yunlong Zi, PhD, FInstP, SMIEEE, FIAAM, is an Associate Professor in the Thrust of Sustainable Energy and Environment in the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology – Guangzhou (HKUST-GZ). Prof. Zi received his Ph.D. in Physics from Purdue University in 2014; his Bachelor of Engineering in Materials Science and Engineering from Tsinghua University in 2009. Before joining HKUST, he worked as an Assistant Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong during 2017-2022, and a Postdoctoral Fellow at Georgia Institute of Technology during 2014-2017. Prof. Zi is an active scholar in the field of triboelectric nanogenerator for high-performance energy harvesting. He coined the field of tribo-photonics toward the self-powered wireless sensing solutions. He has published over 150 journal publications with total citations of over 16000. Prof. Zi was honored as Fellow of the Institute of Physics (FInstP) 2023; Senior Member of IEEE (SMIEEE) 2023; MIT Technology Review 35 Innovators Under 35 Asia & Pacific 2022; Nano Energy Award winner 2021. He was also a Fellow of the International Association of Advanced Materials (FIAAM) 2021; Vebleo Fellow 2021; the winner of MRS Postdoctoral Award by Materials Research Society in 2017; the Emerging Investigators by Journal of Materials Chemistry C in 2018; MINE Young Investigator Finalist in 2018; and one of “5 students who are transformation makers” as highlighted in Purdue homepage in 2013.
